Witsand is a small coastal town situated at the mouth of the Breede River in the Western Cape. Its name originates from the 4km long, unspoilt beach with white bleached sand that provides safe swimming. It is also popular for kitesurfing and windsurfing due to an ideal summer South-Easter wind. Some of the largest bull sharks has been caught in the Breede River and the town is also known for rock and surf angling, deep sea fishing, snorkelling and spear fishing. Witsand is synonymous with hosting one of the largest concentrations of Southern Right Whale visiting to calve every year. The bay earned the reputation of being the most important nursery on the African Coast for these large mammals.
