A small railway town, Touws River (Touwsrivier in Afrikaans) is the first Central Karoo town coming from the Cape. Situated on the river with the same name, the town and area offer various natural, historical and adventure activities. Just outside of the town is the Touwsrivier CPV Solar Project that supplies around 50 MW to the national electrical grid.
