Leeu Gamka

Leeu Gamka is located where the intermittent Leeu and Gamka rivers meet. The words “Leeu” and “Gamka” are Afrikaans and ǀXam words for “Lion” respectively. Originally a choice stop for adventurers, explorers, missionaries, settlers and migrant farmers, the town benefited from increased traffic after diamonds were discovered at Hopetown (1867) and Kimberley (1868). Like most spots in the Central Karoo, Leeu Gamka’s history is rich in stories and legends.
